Rubbish: It’s all a matter of state

Like the power of the sun… (image source: NASA)

The world is plagued with rubbish of which much contains highly toxic substances that are not easily broken down for remediation to the environment.  Randy Leonard, from the New York Times, examines an experimental plasma rubbish incineration system under development by the United States military.

Essentially, a 9K degree plasma arc is applied to rubbish to break chemical bonds, capable of rendering substances such as asbestos, PCBs and dioxin (99%) into (mostly) harmless chemical components.  While breaking down substances, the plasma arc also generates enough fuel to meet its running costs (currently 350kw per day).  It melts down 100% of metals and can process 400 tonnes of garbage per day.

Sounds crazy!
